Summer vacations should be stress-free, but plumbing problems don’t take time off. Before you pack the car and set your away message, take a few minutes to run through these simple checks. A little prevention now can save you from costly surprises later.
1. Check for leaksTake a quick look under sinks, around toilets, and behind your washer. If you spot any signs of moisture or hear a faint drip, don’t ignore it. Even small leaks can cause big problems while you're away.
2. Turn off the main water valve (if you’ll be gone for more than a few days)This is one of the easiest ways to prevent water damage from an unexpected burst pipe or leak. Not sure where your shut-off is? Now’s a good time to find it.
3. Test your sump pumpSummer storms can bring heavy rain, and if your sump pump isn’t working, your basement could flood. Pour a bucket of water into the pit—if it doesn’t kick on, give us a call.
4. Set your water heater to vacation modeIf your water heater has a vacation setting, switch it on. It’ll save energy and reduce the risk of overheating or pressure buildup while you're away.
5. Clear slow drainsIf any of your sinks, tubs, or showers are draining slowly, don’t wait. That gurgle could turn into a clog, and clogs love to get worse when no one’s home to notice.
